TREE PORTRAITS 2007 – 2011

The series of Tree Portraits was taken around the city of Buenos Aires. I treat each tree as an individual, centring them in the composition as I would a person. I am intrigued by how each one has a personality of its own. A character conveyed through its size, build, ‘posture’; the ‘attitude’ expressed through the display of its branches. I am also intrigued by the relationship between the tree and its surrounding, the concrete or brick base it stands in, or meagre hole that it has been granted. I find there are parallels between the trees and us: their individuality and also how they have been destined to grow or not, flourish or suffer within this urban environment of concrete walls and pollution.

“For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. “ Hermann Hesse
